Unable to deal with contactprivacy.com

I've requested a certificate as expected through their web-interface. I've received a confirmation e-mail, telling me that they've sent an e-mail to the contact, which was listed in my WHOIS record @contactprivacy.com What happens then, is that contactprivacy.com responds with instructions how to get in contact with me... which is the whole idea behind this. Apparently there is no human involvement @godaddy.com and their robots simply ignored that response, but did not tell me. After a few days, my certificate request was denied. I've called them the next day, and the guy on the hotline was totally clueless. After explaining the contactprivacy.com approach he told me that I would have to turn off the privacy service in order for them to be able to issue a certificate. I thanked him and asked them to refund my money. I am waiting for my money to be refunded. Godaddy should be upfront about that information (no privacy services permitted), and not let people hang in there for a few days with a false sense of hope.

Was skeptical, but I love GoDaddy.

GoDaddy is the third CA I've tried. I also went through the ordering and configuring with the two that give free trials. GeoTrust and Comodo. I initially wanted to buy a GeoTrust when the free period ran out. Mostly for the name. But then the link in the email from them lead to a dead end. And there were several confusing sites due to all the marketing and branding. GoDaddy doesn't offer a free trial, but it was just $29, (or $13 if you search and find the right GoDaddy page). So I thought it was cheap enough to just give it a shot. And the website and set up was fantastic. Easily the best of the three as far as intuitiveness and usability. I bought and installed two certs on Ubuntu + Apache. Worked fine right away. The only negative: On their doc pages listing how to generate the cert requests, I found the text a bit sparse, and might not have given all the details. For example, it said to make sure that 2048 bits are used in the request. But it didn't say how to do this. And it turned out that 2048 bits are the default (at least on my Ubuntu system). So I had to read up on how to verify the contents of a cert. Not hard.

I have experiences from other ssl cert. issuers, and I for instance still remember that I waited almost 3 days for an answer from Geotrust, or the product I received was not the one I had ordered, or people did not answer my questions in their answers. How about some other SSL issuers that did not get back to me at all. Anyway, even though my purchase was of a quite little amount, I received proper support from GoDaddy supporters - less than 30 minutes in 1 case, and less than 2 hours in another. I appreciate this a lot. And I guess I know where to shop next time.

First, their certificates work. SSL can be complicated to the new user. Intermediate signing authorities are important for risk management. Install intermediate certificates on your server is probably a temporary issue for godaddy till they get all their intermediates included in operating systems and browsers. For me, the bulk of godaddy's problems revolve around their website design that looks like a teenagers bedroom wall. Marketing clutter that seems targeted to 16 year olds. But once you get the hang of their processes it all works smoothly and the certificates are at a good price and widely acceptable by browsers and operating systems (with the intermediates installed on the server). If you need serious help then buy more expensive certificates from someone else or simply hire some tech guru to help you.

Ordered from Germany...

I have ordered my Deluxe SSL Cert. from Germany. First, they had some problems verifying our Corporation (sent in our excerpt from the commercial register in GERMAN language! we didn't translate it, but would have done so by request!), so they want to check our VAT-ID in the European Commission Taxation and Customs database. BUT: this database does not feature addresses for German companies as our Country does not provide address records for data security reasons. So you can verify if the VAT-ID is valid, but you don't get an address record. So I've called our Federal Tax Office in Germany and requested the data by Fax. After submitting these docs, we got approved. I am very satisfied with GoDaddy.com - the price of the certs. is very low - and I didn't have to use an official translation office for ordering! Next, I want to purchase a Code Signing Cert. and I am sure I will buy it at GoDaddy.com!

Have had 4 SSL certs with them for over 2 years, then they auto-renewed all them without my knowledge, took my money and didnt credit me to renew the certs. Now they don't want to know me and told me to pay for them again. Stay away.

HELL for Mexican Domains

After submiting my CSR, the system didn't show any response for about 12 hours, after that, I'v got an e-mail from godaddy with 4 alternative methods to verify my domain. As simple and easy as adding a .html page to my root page with the code they gave, as hard as adding a CNAME to my domain with the code they gave me. passing throw letters sent via e-mail, fax and postal service.. NOTHING WORKED After 3 or 4 days, I'v got an e-mail from support telling me that as the e-mail shown on the Whois DB was not the same as the one i gave them, there was nothing they could do, and asked me to follow (again) every alternative. The e-mail was the same registered in NIC Mexico (The manage the information on the WhoIS DB for mexican domains) But... NIC Mexico, for security reasons... does not display the e-mail adress in the Whois DB. So... I had to change my name registered with NIC Mexico, so they could update the Whois DB. In the Last Name field, I just wrote: E-Mail: my_e-mail_adress@kuvrio.com.mx After this, I'v sent the CSR Again and in less than 20 minutes, I've goto my Certificate. About the other alternative methods... none of ther worked. So if you have an international domain registered with a registar that does not show your e-mail adress in the WhoIS DB, just Write as your last name E-Mail: -your email adress-

I purchased the GoDaddy certs because of price. Getting it installed was difficult, but I attribute that to this being my first go at installing a cert into Exchange 2007. My issues were both at installing the intermediate cert and installing my cert. Both issues were my fault and not that of Godaddy. With the intermediate cert, I had trouble importing it because when I went to import it I would highlight the "Intermediate Certificate Authorities" then right click to import. This does not work... Just put your mouse over it then right click and it will work. Took me 3 hours to figure this out. My personal cert didn't work until I figured out that I was using the thumbprint of the self signed cert to enable instead of the Godaddy cert. Once I recognized that mistake, boom it all worked. Like I said, these were my issues and I will continue to use Godaddy because of price.

Getting the cert was like pulling teeth. Several calls to support that always resulted in "we were just going to call you" Sure you were. Waiting on hold for 20 to 30 minutes and when you did get someone they gave you a hard time. STAY AWAY FROM GO DADDY. After this cert is up they couldn't give me one for free.

The Godaddy website might be a little confusing, however they do offer the cheapest certificates around. The review from 'Jay Miller' is incorrect; the intermediate certificates only needs to be installed server-side and Firefox/Opera/Whatever will happily accept the certificate by default.

I chose GoDaddy because of how cheap they are and because I don't need a fully validated certificate. I ordered it on a weekend so, rather than being issued in a few minutes, it was issued in 8-9 hours. Other than that, the process was pretty simple and satisfactory.

Turn on Nascar, crack open a Budweiser, and visit godaddy.com. When you get there try not to be distracted by the all of the Nascar adds, special offers, GoDaddyGirls link, or other offensive clutter. Instead try to get down to the business of navigating their confusing, and often unusable web site. Often you can't get the job done through their web interface, but their phone support usually takes care of the problem pretty quick after some time waiting on hold. I seriously don't know what these guys are thinking. They are the cheapest game in town, but sometimes you get what you pay for.

Go Daddy's certificates are cheap, but for anyone who expects clients other than recent Microsoft browsers, they aren't the way to go. A moment in Google will reveal that current versions of neither Firefox nor Safari supports Go Daddy certificates without additional "intermediate" certificates. Additionally, a set of intermediate certificates even need to be installed on the IIS side, so not even the server-side is as straight-forward as it could be. Worse, at least one of our customers associates "Go Daddy" more with chauvinistic Super Bowl ads than security. Very embarrassing. Spend a few bucks more at RapidSSL or one of the more reputable providers - Go Daddy isn't worth the savings.
